Clean, Drain, Dry: Help Protect Our Waters from Invasive Mussels
/British Columbia is home to some of the most pristine lakes and rivers in Canada, but these waterways remain at risk from invasive species.
While B.C. is currently free of invasive mussels, Whirling Disease has been detected in B.C.
Clean, Drain, and Dry is a preventative step that all boaters must follow when moving any watercraft or water equipment between waterbodies to prevent the spread of aquatic invasive species.
It is illegal to transport watercraft (including boats, kayaks, canoes and paddle boards), water-related equipment or aircraft on land, unless all drainage holes, valves or other devices used to drain water are left open or unplugged.

Follow the "Clean, Drain, Dry" Method
Every time you move your boat or watercraft between bodies of water, remember to:
🧽 Clean
Remove all plants, mud, animals, and debris from your boat, trailer, motor, anchors, fishing gear, and other equipment.
💧 Drain
Before leaving a waterbody, drain all water on dry land (including all internal compartments such as ballasts, bilges, and live wells), coolers, life jackets and other gear
☀️ Dry
Allow your boat and equipment to dry completely before launching into another lake or river. Drying helps eliminate any organisms that may not be visible to the naked eye.
Why It Matters
Once established, invasive mussels are nearly impossible to eradicate. They reproduce rapidly, clog water intake systems, damage boats and docks, outcompete native species, and alter aquatic ecosystems.
By taking a few extra minutes to Clean, Drain, and Dry, you can help protect the waters we all enjoy for fishing, boating, paddling, and wildlife.
Protecting our waterways is a shared responsibility. Thank you for doing your part to keep B.C.'s lakes and rivers healthy for future generations.
